Montessori Method & Philosophy

Montessori method is the result of Dr.Montessori’s observation of a child for 50 years and the scientific discoveries made by educators and scientists. Dr. Montessori’s observations of children revealed that children had very different behaviour and very different needs during their stages in their development. She divided the ages from birth to age 24 into four planes of development, each lasting about 6 years. There is a flow from absorbing mind to inquiring mind of what and where to Why?, How? and When?. Montessori is also a discovery learning approach.

Dr. Montessori saw life as a continuum, Montessori education is a continuum in which the growth that occurs in one stage of development prepares the child for the work they will do in the next plane of development. Montessori curriculum presents the child with a series of manageable steps in each area mastering each task. The steps derived from observations of children, are carefully organized, focus on important skills and information and culminate in the child’s mastery.

Shortly, the observations led to a method of schooling with a different model of a child and the school than those that prevail in traditional schooling.

The secret of success in education is found to lie in the right use of imagination in awakening the interest, and the stimulation of seeds of interest already sown – Maria Montessori
